Be Careful of WikiLeaks

An article by BoRev.net is cautioning people about the popular WikiLeaks website. A few hacked emails, like those of American vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin and American political commentator Bill O’Reilly, have made their way onto the website. But this article stresses that the organization may not have everything it promises and could be selling you out, or at least threatening to do so.

“Remember how last month WikiLeaks claimed that they had hit the mother load of hacked emails from “a top aid to president Hugo Chavez” and if you paid them cash money they’d let you look at them?”

Ontario Info Commissioner has plans for privacy

An article by Mediacaster has an in-depth article about the Ontario Information and Privacy Commissioner. Now, I warn you the article is filled with a few words that made me pull out my dictionary. However, once you get to the meat of the article it talks about her goals of bringing in tougher security provisions, which could help everyone in the future. For example, one of her goals is to embed privacy into the design and architecture of all technologies.

“Ontario Information and Privacy Commissioner Ann Cavoukian is scheduled to unveil a key white paper outlining what will need to be done to protect privacy in the future, at a special presentation at the University of Waterloo today.”

emails easy to crack

Everyone is talking about Yahoo’s email security lately. But, according to an article by PC World it might not be much harder to crack a Google Gmail account. It just goes to show that you should be careful what you allow online.

“Who is the real identity behind that Gmail account? While finding out may not be as easy as knowing who is behind chunkylover53@aol.com (Homer Simpson, for the curious), it apparently isn’t much harder.”

U.S. Political commentator victim of Hacktivism

Remember that saying, “When you point a finger at someone else you always have three pointing back at you.” Well, Americian political commentator Bill O’Reilly might have learned that the hard way this past weekend. O’Reilly gave American vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin a hard time for having her email hacked. Well, someone did the same thing to O’Reilly recently placing several of his texts online. “Days after Fox News political pundit Bill O’Reilly condemned the cracking of Sarah Palin’s Yahoo e-mail account, his own Web site fell victim to political hacktivism.”

Questions arise over Google/Yahoo Pact

It seems not everybody thinks a pact between Google and Yahoo is a good one. According to an article by Marketwatch, some say that the partnership could create a non-competitive environment in regards to advertising. Experts also fear for user privacy believing that one entity would have too much information.

“The Center for Digital Democracy said in a letter to Sen. Herb Kohl that in addition to a potential impact on direct competition in the search advertising market, the proposed partnership could threaten Internet users’ privacy by placing too much user data with a single entity.”

Experts warn of PDF attacks

Lots of people use PDF files, especially home users. Now, security experts are warning that a new crop of tools are popping up on the internet to expoit the flaws if PDF’s.  Vnunet.com has the full article.

“The US Computer Emergency Response Team (US-Cert) and Secure Computing issued alerts after several exploit tools were found to be making the rounds in the cyber-crime underworld.”

Porn industry tries to assure public of online privacy

Well, the online adult entertainment industry is doing its best to assure customers that they are still under cover. This comes after a hacker recently breached security. Now, many people who signed up for the sites in private are afraid of some of their personal information being exposed, such as email addresses. Check out the article by Bestsecurity.com.

“The porn industry is fighting not to lose the trust of its customers because a recent Internet security breach may put consumers of online pornography in defense. Those who over the few months have registered in secret on Web sites with sexual content may shockingly discover that some of their personal data such as e-mail addresses may be out in the open now.”

Coffee customers info stolen

You can buy just about anything online these days. But, with that comes the threat of info loss too. According to an article by Pogowasright, Gloria Jean’s Coffee recently sent a letter out acknowledging that 511 of their online customers may have had their personal data stolen. It seems someone hacked into their online site.

“Gloria Jean’s Coffee has notified over 500 customers who placed orders on their web site earlier this month that their credit card information was acquired.”

University student leaves school after hacking accounts

According to the Ottawa Citizen, a Carleton University student has decided not to return to school to avoid punishment from university officials for hacking into 32 electronic student accounts. The 20-year-old student claims he did it to show the university that their security system has several flaws.

“Mansour Moufid, a 20-year-old second-year math student, sent a 16-page report to university administrators and students under the pseudonym “Kasper Holmberg” earlier this month, in which he showed that he had accessed the Campus Card accounts of 32 students.”

Brits part with info pretty easy

There’s an interesting article by TheRegister. It turns out that several people in a survey were willing to part with their online passwords and other information for a £5 voucher. Funny thing is the same article shows another group of people who think there should be tougher penalties for identity thefts.
